Rep. Earl L. "Buddy" Carter has issued a statement following the collapse of a ferry dock on Sapelo Island, Georgia, which resulted in at least seven fatalities and sent eight individuals to the hospital.
"My heart breaks for Sapelo Island, the Gullah-Geechee community, the victims, and the families grieving a loved one following yesterday’s tragedy," Carter said. He highlighted the event's contrast with what was meant to be a celebration of the Gullah-Geechee community's culture and heritage.
Carter emphasized support for those affected by this incident. "The Gullah-Geechee community deserves our unwavering support during this challenging time," he stated, expressing gratitude to first responders and others who assisted in rescue efforts.
He called for a thorough investigation into how the collapse occurred, stressing that safety is paramount. "We must take all necessary steps to prevent a tragedy like this from occurring again," Carter noted.
In closing his statement, Carter pledged continued support for both victims and their families: "We will work diligently to honor the memory of those we have lost and to support those who are healing."
