US Rep. McCormick: ‘Banning a presidential candidate from the ballot = saving democracy’

U.S. Representative Rich McCormick (R-GA) recently contested a liberal viewpoint expressed in an X post, which he described as the disqualification of a presidential candidate being used as a measure to safeguard democracy. This response was made in light of the recent decision that disqualified former President Trump from appearing on the ballot in Colorado’s forthcoming elections.

McCormick succinctly expressed his disagreement with this viewpoint through a series of quotes: “Liberal logic:”, “Showing an ID to vote = Jim Crow”, and “Banning a presidential candidate from the ballot = saving democracy”. These remarks were made by McCormick, who currently serves as a Congressman at the United States House of Representatives.

As reported by Newsmax, the Colorado Supreme Court recently issued a 4-3 ruling that disqualified former President Donald Trump from appearing on the state’s 2024 presidential ballot. This historic judgment, likely to be appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court, cited Trump’s involvement in the Capitol attack on January 6, 2021. The decision marks Trump as the first presidential candidate declared ineligible under a constitutional clause that bars officials engaged in ‘insurrection or rebellion’.

In addition to this ruling, Newsmax reports that the Colorado court has postponed its enforcement until January 4, 2024. This allows for appeals and affects only the state’s March 5 Republican primary but could potentially influence Trump’s status in the November 5 general election. The case was initiated by Colorado voters and supported by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington. They argue that Trump should be disqualified for allegedly inciting the Capitol attack with an intention to obstruct Biden’s power transfer following the 2020 election.

Steven Cheung, a spokesperson for Trump’s campaign, commented on this issue during an interview with CNN. He stated: “The Colorado Supreme Court issued a completely flawed decision tonight and we will swiftly file an appeal to the United States Supreme Court and a concurrent request for a stay of this deeply undemocratic decision. We have full confidence that the U.S. Supreme Court will quickly rule in our favor and finally put an end to these unAmerican lawsuits.”

According to an Axios report, McCormick, who is also an emergency room physician and Marine veteran, won over his Trump-backed rival, Jake Evans, in a GOP primary runoff for Georgia’s 6th Congressional District in June 2022.
