U.S. Representative Andrew Clyde said on April 21 that Americans deserve an Attorney General who is committed to protecting and restoring Second Amendment rights, as the Trump administration prepares to fill key cabinet positions following the 2024 election.

The topic has drawn attention among lawmakers and gun owners nationwide, with a focus on how executive authority could be used to advance firearm-related priorities without new legislation from Congress. Approximately 107 million Americans personally own firearms, while household gun ownership rates remain robust across the country. Georgia operates as a constitutional carry state that allows qualified individuals to carry firearms without additional permitting requirements in many locations. These figures reflect the significant number of law-abiding citizens who depend on strong Second Amendment safeguards for self-defense and personal liberty, according to Ammo.com.

Clyde made his statement in a post on X as reported by his congressional office following the April 21 release of a letter he led to President Trump. The Georgia lawmaker and over 30 House Republican colleagues signed the correspondence that outlines three priorities for the next Attorney General to implement without new legislation from Congress. The action highlights the coalition’s emphasis on immediate steps available at the Department of Justice to fulfill constitutional protections, according to Clyde’s congressional office.

According to Clyde, “Americans deserve an Attorney General who is committed to protecting and restoring our Second Amendment rights. That’s why I’m urging President Trump to pick a strong pro-2A AG—as well as providing a roadmap for their success.”

The Biden administration advanced multiple Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) rules, including regulations on pistol stabilizing braces, ghost guns, and expanded background check mandates on private transfers through changes in the definition of being engaged in the business of selling firearms. These measures encountered legal challenges in federal courts, with several injunctions issued against full enforcement. The actions generated widespread concern among supporters of Second Amendment rights regarding regulatory expansion into constitutionally protected activities, as reported by Breitbart.

Clyde served 28 years in the United States Navy, including three combat deployments to Iraq and Kuwait as a combat veteran. The small business owner and gun store proprietor has represented Georgia’s Ninth Congressional District since 2021. Clyde has sponsored and supported multiple pieces of legislation aimed at protecting Second Amendment rights during his time in Congress, according to his official biography.
