Reps. Earl L. “Buddy” Carter, Diana DeGette, Kat Cammack, Kathy Castor, Ryan Mackenzie, and Robin Kelly have introduced the Preventing Maternal Deaths Reauthorization Act of 2025. This legislation aims to assist states in improving maternal health during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum periods by addressing disparities and enhancing healthcare quality for mothers.
Rep. Carter expressed pride in collaborating with bipartisan colleagues on the bill: “Georgians are severely impacted by our nation’s alarming and preventable maternal mortality crisis, and this bill will help ensure that all families have access to lifesaving health care resources.”
DeGette highlighted the urgency of addressing maternal mortality: “The United States has the highest maternal mortality rate of any high-income nation... 80 percent of maternal deaths are preventable.” She emphasized understanding root causes as crucial to solving the issue.
Rep. Cammack stated that the legislation renews commitment to tackling maternal mortality by supporting Maternal Mortality Review Committees and promoting evidence-based practices: "Every mother deserves access to safe, high-quality care throughout her pregnancy and beyond."
Rep. Kelly noted her ongoing efforts to address disparities in maternal healthcare: “The Preventing Maternal Deaths Reauthorization Act is a significant step forward in tackling the maternal mortality crisis.”
Castor urged Congress to act swiftly: “This reauthorization will strengthen lifesaving initiatives that use research, prevention, and evidence-based best practices.”
Mackenzie reflected on his experience at the state level and stressed national efforts: "By enhancing funding... this bill will save lives and improve healthcare outcomes for families across the nation."
