The Haven Zoo in Lavonia, Georgia, is inviting the public to sponsor animals as a Valentine's Day initiative. This zoo, which houses nearly 80 animals, including exotic, domestic, and native species, operates as a nonprofit organization run entirely by volunteers. JohnieSue Thurman, the founder of the Haven Zoo, expressed gratitude towards community members who support the zoo through volunteering and donations.

Mosey the fox and Asante the African serval are among the animals residing at the Haven Zoo. Asante was rescued from an unsuitable home by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources before finding refuge at this facility. "We all work full-time jobs," said JohnieSue Thurman while interacting with a goat at the zoo. "But our heart and soul work overtime with these animals."

Thurman noted that securing reliable volunteers and sufficient donations are ongoing challenges for maintaining operations at the zoo. The largest expenses include veterinary bills and feed costs for the animals, many of whom were rescued from various situations such as black market trade or unlicensed homes.

To address these needs, sponsorships are being promoted to help cover expenses while offering sponsors a personal connection to their chosen animal or group of animals. February presents an opportunity for people to demonstrate affection for both animals and animal lovers by sponsoring them or gifting tours of the zoo.

For those interested in contributing through volunteer efforts or fulfilling community service requirements, opportunities are available by contacting The Haven Zoo via email at thehavenzoo@gmail.com or calling 770-322-4838.
