Rep. Earl L. "Buddy" Carter (R-GA) marked the official renaming of the Hinesville Veterans Affairs Clinic to honor four local heroes from the First Congressional District who lost their lives in the Vietnam War. The clinic will now be known as the John Gibson, Dan James, William Sapp, and Frankie Smiley VA Clinic.
This change follows Carter's bill, H.R. 593, which became law in May with unanimous support from Georgia's Congressional Delegation.
“I am incredibly proud of this accomplishment and credit the amazing residents of Liberty County with giving these brave young heroes the permanent recognition they deserve in the home they gave their lives to protect,” said Rep. Carter. “This VA Clinic is only a small example of the immense gratitude that our district has for the service members who defend our liberties every single day.”
John Gibson was born on September 12, 1946, in Riceboro, Georgia. He served in the United States Marine Corps and was killed during the Tet Offensive on February 7, 1968.

William Sapp hailed from Hinesville and was born on March 12, 1943. He served in Vietnam and died on June 7, 1968.
Frankie Lee Smiley was born on May 18, 1944, in Liberty County. A member of the United States Marine Corps like Gibson, he died on August 25th, 1968.
