FOIA Request Sent to Lumpkin County Election Department Regarding Ballot Counting Methods on October 29, 2024

A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Lumpkin County Election Department on October 29, 2024. The request was made by us at Georgia Mountain News, a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.

In our pursuit of transparency and accountability in public institutions, we sought specific records under the Georgia Open Records Act § 50.18.70 et seq. We requested a list of methods being used by the department to count votes for the upcoming election. If the votes are being counted manually, we asked for an estimated number of people who will be working on election night.

As part of our mission to disseminate information and provide transparency to the public, we also expressed our eligibility for a fee waiver as a media professional. This is in line with our commitment to gather and report news that holds public institutions accountable.

We continue to wait for a response from the Lumpkin County Election Department regarding this request.
