It's not often that one celebrates a 100th birthday. We had the privilege of honoring Mr. Theron Ragsdale in the Commissioners meeting on Tuesday night.
On January 3, 1923, Theron Ragsdale was born in Banks County, Georgia. He attended Mount Pleasant School and graduated from Homer High School in 1940; and Theron attended Young Harris College in Young Harris Georgia before enlisting in the US Navy in 1943 to serve his Country in WWII. He served in the Pacific Theater aboard the USS Bailey (DD-492), before being transferred to shore duty on the newly liberated Enewetak Atoll, finishing out his service aboard the USS Sheridan (APA-51); and upon returning back to Banks County after the war, Theron enrolled in, and graduated from, the University of Georgia, paying for his education with the GI Bill he had earned for service in WWII. Theron worked for the United States Post Office, his first position serving on a mail train in the northeast Georgia area that included Banks County, and eventually retiring from the United States Postal Service with thirty-eight years of service. After retirement, Theron volunteered his time creating and repairing trails for hikers on the Appalachian Trail in northeast Georgia. He lived in many different parts of Georgia and the Nation over the course of his life, but when asked where he was from, always responded with Banks County, Georgia. Banks County honors Mr. Theron Ragsdale for his service to the community, state and country and the impact he has had on his family, community, and nation, as well as the example he has set for serving the community and county.
Thank you Mr. Ragsdale and Happy birthday!
