Northeast Georgia Medical Center issued the following announcement on Mar. 18.

Families who trust New Horizons for the long-term care of their loved ones can have even greater confidence in the quality of their care as the facility’s medical director received national recognition for her leadership of the facility. The Society of Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine (AMDA) named Swati Gaur, MD, the national society’s Medical Director of the Year for setting an outstanding example for other medical directors across the country.

“Dr. Gaur goes above and beyond to ensure that we provide the best care possible to our residents every day,” said Kerry Smith, Executive Director of Long-Term Care. “She is more than just a medical director at New Horizons; she is a valuable part of our team and member of our long-term care family.”

AMDA presents this award to one medical director each year for their knowledge, experience, passion, and teamwork – as well as the ability to multi-task, stay on top of clinical and quality improvement innovations, and lead facilities in providing quality care.

Throughout the pandemic, Dr. Gaur provided the most current information about COVID-19, the vaccine, visitation guidelines and any other pertinent information, allowing the leadership team to make the proper changes to protect residents and staff. This included converting a wing of New Horizons Limestone to a COVID-19 positive unit and developing protocols for safe visitation. She also initiated daily virtual meetings to discuss residents with COVID symptoms, nationwide best practices, needed protocol changes and updates from Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services, the Center for Disease Control or Department of Public Health.

“COVID-19 has challenged us all in ways we didn’t expect, but our team rose to the occasion,” said Dr. Gaur. “I am accepting this award on behalf of my whole team for their tenacity, long hours, and willingness to work together to come up with new solutions. They care for each other and will do whatever it takes to provide the highest quality care for our residents.”

Northeast Georgia Health System has two long-term care facilities — New Horizons Limestone and New Horizons Lanier Park, and offers medical support a comfortable home away from home. A skilled team of nurses, certified nursing assistants and support staff provide excellent care for patients with fractures requiring rehabilitation, joint replacements and more.
