The school has received Common Sense School certification from the national nonprofit organization Common Sense.  Schools achieve this designation by demonstrating a strong commitment to teaching students to think critically and to use technology responsibly.

“We applaud Knox Elementary School STEM Academy for embracing digital citizenship as an important part of their students’ education,” said Kelly Mendoza, vice president of education programs at Common Sense Education.  “The faculty and staff deserve high praise for giving students the foundational skills they need to compete and succeed in the 21st-century workplace and participate ethically in society at large.”

Principal Jennifer McIntosh thanked media specialist Leslie Hicks, who is CCSD’s Media Specialist of the Year, for her work that earn this recognition for Knox.  Ms. Hicks uses Common Sense Education’s resources as part of her lessons to teach students responsible technology use including internet safety, protecting personal privacy and their online reputation, managing online relationships and avoiding cyberbullying, and understanding media literary and balance and the perils of plagiarism.

“We’re honored to be recognized as a Common Sense School,” Principal McIntosh said.  ““By preparing our students to use technology safely and responsibly, we are providing them an opportunity to build lifelong habits to help them succeed in a tech-driven world.”
