Atlanta Technical College issued the following announcement on Nov. 18.

Atlanta Technical College (ATC) along with the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) celebrates this year’s National Apprenticeship Week (November 15-19, 2021) by highlighting the importance of apprenticeship programs to growing Fulton and Clayton County’s skilled workforce.

ATC is among Georgia’s 22 technical colleges, including the system office, to serve as registered apprenticeship sponsors making it a part of the largest registered apprenticeship network throughout the state. In recent years, ATC has offered Registered Apprenticeship Programs in healthcare and IT fields, serving 135 apprentices and 12 employers. Additionally, the College has established apprenticeship opportunities in the fields of construction, automotive technology, plumbing, and diesel maintenance technology to serve local industry needs.

“The changing workforce accelerated by the pandemic and the increasing retirements of the baby boomer generation have made apprenticeships a go-to for employers because they can train employees in their company culture,” said Caroline Angelo, Executive Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs at ATC. “It’s the best of both worlds for students, with in-class learning from knowledgeable professors and on-the-job training with employers who are willing to invest their time and effort into their employees’ development.”

Currently, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, there are more than 9,000 active apprentices throughout the state of Georgia, which continues Georgia’s rise in apprenticeship activity. This figure is expected to grow with the additional apprenticeship funding available to Georgia employers and apprentices, such as the Apprenticeship State Expansion (ASE) Grant and Georgia’s HOPE Career Grant.
