Northeast Georgia Medical Center issued the following announcement on Oct. 9.
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused many of us re-think our routines due to having to balance remote work, childcare and school, sickness and more. Because of this uncertainty that comes with schedule changes, you may have wanted to delay a routine checkup, screening, or annual mammogram.
We want to encourage you not to let the pandemic stop you from making your health a priority. Read below for more information regarding your screening at an Imaging Center of NGMC and tips on scheduling your appointment!
Why is it important for me to continue having annual screening mammograms during a pandemic?
Statistics show that about 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer over the course of their lifetime. Delaying your screening mammogram could seriously delay a cancer diagnosis, which could lead to more advanced stage cancer and aggressive treatment. The purpose of an annual screening mammogram is to detect cancer early before you even start to have any symptoms, such as a lump in your breast.
There’s No Need to Worry!
Whether it’s your first time or your third time, all mammograms can be scary! Our staff at the Imaging Centers are here to make the exam as comfortable and easy as possible. You will be asked important screening COVID questions at the time of scheduling and at the time of registration. A face mask will be required while on campus, and if you do not have a face mask, we will provide you with one.
What are the current guidelines for having a screening mammogram?
The NGHS Mammography department and Gainesville Radiology Group follow the American College of Radiology recommendation to have your first screening at the age of 40.
You may begin sooner than 40 if you have a family history or are at increased risk for breast cancer. Talk to your physician to determine the most appropriate screening regimen based on your family history.
