BRENAU UNIVERSITY: Brenau University’s GOLD Speaker Series to feature Argentinian television and radio host

Speaker

Brenau University issued the following announcement on Sept. 20.

The Women’s College of Brenau University and the Office and International Strategy and Partnerships will host Maria Rita Nahum, journalist, executive coach, political advisor and nonprofit leader from Argentina, as part of the GOLD Speaker Series from 12:30-1:45 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 30, via Zoom.

Nahum is the first international speaker for the series, which is an ongoing component of The Women’s College’s GOLD Program. The event is free and open to the public, but advanced registration at brenau.edu/gold-speaker is required to receive the Zoom link.

Nahum is a former journalism professor and now produces and hosts popular television and radio programs. Her work on the board of Casa de la Mujer, a nonprofit organization dedicated to combating gender violence, has helped thousands of women and garnered national acclaim. Nahum was awarded the Woman Leader for the Building of Values and Peace in 2016 for her contributions to gender equality. In addition, she serves as a consultant for Argentina’s National Institute of Statistics and Census and the National Secretariat of Communications Professionals.

“I feel honored that someone with such a notable reputation in her part of the world will share her expertise, energy and encouragement for women with us and our community live,” said Debra Dobkins, dean of The Women’s College.

The event, which takes place during Hispanic Heritage Month, will be conducted in both Spanish and English. Nahum is a native Spanish speaker and her keynote speech will be translated by Eduardo Nino-Moreno, husband of Brenau Executive Director of International Strategy and Partnerships Rosi Ponce. Opening remarks by Brenau President Anne Skleder and Ponce will be presented in both languages, as will comments by student speaker Valentina Pabon, a senior marketing major from Colombia.

“I’m thrilled that the first international GOLD speaker has excelled as a professional, educator and advocate for women’s rights and wellness in the province of Misiones, Argentina,” Ponce said. “Maria Rita’s speech will be insightful and inspirational to all of us.”

Dobkins said that it is crucial to have events like this so that Brenau’s American students are exposed to diverse international experiences and cultures. It also offers an opportunity for the university’s international student population to actively engage in the campus community.

“This event will allow our American students to be part of an international conversation and be a point of pride for any of our students of Hispanic heritage as well,” she said. “I think given our international efforts, we are ready and eager to be on a global stage.”

The dynamic GOLD Speaker Series, which brings compelling leaders to speak to the Brenau community and guests, is currently in its “L” year and focusing on the theme of “Leadership: The Joy in Doing.” This follows the “G” year dedicated to gender awareness and the “O” year, which was about ownership of personal responsibility and challenged students to participate in the democratic process. The ensuing “D” year will focus on diversity.

Nahum’s speech follows that of Phillippa Lewis Moss, director of the Gainesville-Hall County Community Services Center, who shared tips with attendees on how to be a leader in the 21st century.
