City of Union issued the following announcement on July 30.
In response to rising statewide COVID-19 cases and the highly contagious delta variant, Union City's Mayor and Council issued an emergency Ordinance requiring all persons to wear a mask in buildings owned or occupied by the City and strongly encouraging the use of masks in all commercial establishments in the City.
The Ordinance follows a recent directive from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) advising individuals to wear masks in public, whether they are vaccinated or not. The CDC’s announcement Tuesday was a reversal from previous federal guidelines that allows fully vaccinated individuals to not wear masks in public.
According to CDC data, Fulton and DeKalb counties are among areas of high community spread of COVID-19. The new guidelines were issued amid a worldwide surge that began affecting Georgia this month, much of it spreading among those not vaccinated. The pace of vaccinations decreased, hovering at 40% fully vaccinated statewide.
The City’s Ordinance requires all persons to wear a mask while inside City-owned or occupied buildings. Restaurants, retail stores, salons, barbershops, grocery stores and pharmacies within City limits are encouraged to require all employees to always wear a mask while engaged in face-to-face interaction with the public.
Any person who is unable to safely wear a mask due to age, underlying health conditions, or is unable to remove the mask without assistance of others is exempt from this Ordinance.
Masks are not required in the following circumstances:
- In personal vehicles;
- When a person is alone in an enclosed space or only with other household members;
- During outdoor physical activity, provided the active person maintains proper social distancing at a minimum of six (6) feet from others who are not household members;
- While eating, drinking, or smoking;
- When a licensed health provider has determined wearing a mask causes or aggravates a health condition in the specific individual;
- When wearing a mask or face covering would prevent the receipt of personal services; and
- When a person is younger than twelve (12) years old.
