FOIA Request to University of North Georgia Regarding Chinese National Students on June 4, 2025.

As part of our commitment to transparency and accountability in governmental affairs, we at Georgia Mountain News have submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the University of North Georgia. Our request seeks detailed information concerning Chinese National students currently enrolled at the university.

The request specifically asks for documents or lists that reveal the number and departmental distribution of Chinese National students. Additionally, we are seeking information about scholarships awarded to these students, including the amount and source of each scholarship. We have also requested details on any recipients affiliated with the Chinese Scholarship Council.

Furthermore, our inquiry extends to understanding how the university safeguards its intellectual property and confidential information, particularly in relation to monitoring international students.

This request is made in collaboration with The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting transparency through leveraging Freedom of Information and Sunshine Laws. As members of the media, we emphasize that access to public records is crucial for us to fulfill our role in informing the public and holding institutions accountable. Consequently, we have requested a fee waiver for this inquiry.

We anticipate that this request will shed light on the university’s policies and practices regarding international students and contribute to a broader understanding of governmental transparency in educational institutions.
